Seafood Science Analyst
Growing up on the shores of Lake Erie in Ontario, Sam developed an appreciation for aquatic life which led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Marine and Freshwater Biology at the University of Guelph. With a particular love of sharks and rays, Sam sought opportunities to gain field experience during her undergrad by completing internships in Bimini, Bahamas and Hermanus, South Africa; falling ever more in love with the ocean. Fresh from her undergraduate studies she worked as a laboratory assistant at the Ontario Veterinary College processing aquaculture DNA samples and caring for a variety of corals and marine fishes. After some time Sam decided to continue exploring her passion for ocean conservation, packing up and moving to Nova Scotia to complete a Masters of Marine Management at Dalhousie University. During her research, Sam explored the efficacy of protected areas for sharks and rays in Atlantic Canada and the process of monitoring and managing the conservation of highly migratory species. From there she remained in Halifax and assisted and continues to be involved with a project to unravel the global shark meat trade, putting her interdisciplinary skills to work. Sam is excited to continue following her passion for small-scale fisheries and seafood sustainability through her Ocean Wise role and apply her dedication to ocean conservation.
