Developing Ocean Wise Ratings: Eco-certifications

Ocean Wise ratings are available for some eco-certified seafoods due to benchmarking by our colleagues at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program which compared the scoring of different eco-certification assessment Standards to the Standard scoring used by Seafood Watch and Ocean Wise Seafood.

Eco-certifications are different than rating in terms of the specificity of coverage and assessment process, but ultimately both indicate whether a fishery or aquaculture practice is environmentally sustainable.

Ocean Wise ratings for eco-certified fisheries

Seafood Watch benchmarked the MSC Standard in 2012 and determined that the lowest performing MSC certified fisheries score 2.38 out of the 5-point scale Seafood Watch Standard scoring that Ocean Wise Seafood uses to score the environmental sustainability of wild capture fisheries.

This score is below the minimum score required to be considered Ocean Wise Recommended (2.8 out of 5), therefore our program recommends some but not all MSC certified seafoods. To learn more about the specifics of how Ocean Wise Seafood determines ratings for MSC certified fisheries please view our program’s Scoring Methodology and Rating System policy.

Ocean Wise ratings for eco-certified aquaculture

Farmed seafood certified by some global eco-certifications have been benchmarked to Seafood Watch Standard scoring. These benchmarking reports are specific to individual seafoods OR species and do not provide broad coverage across all eco-certified seafood.  For a complete list of farmed, eco-certified seafood where Ocean Wise Seafood is able to determine a rating, please view the table below.
