Summary

Hogfish are found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate reefs in the Western Atlantic and Caribbean. Hogfish are slow-growing and long-lived, making them vulnerable to fishing pressure. They start out as females and change to males as they age. The population in Western Florida and South Carolina is thought to be healthy. Hogfish are primarily targeted with handline and spears which have limited contact with bottom habitats. Hogfish are sold in the United States, Caribbean, and Mexico.

Summary

Hogfish in the Florida Keys and east Florida are overfished due to high fishing pressure. Although there is no formal stock assessment for the population in Puerto Rico, methods designed for analyzing data-limited fisheries suggests that the population is overexploited. The status of the stock in Georgia to North Carolina could not be determined.
