Summary

Management of the European anchovies is ineffective. The abundance of the anchovies is unknown, but fishing is occurring at an unsustainable rate. Anchovies are caught together with other forage fish such as sardines, sprat, and mackerels. The bycatch of chub mackerel is of concern since it is overfished, and the mortality of the threatened short-beaked common dolphins is known to occur. Market availability: Lack of traceability is a challenge. While anchovies are imported to Canada, the exact species is not always specified, and it is also not always known whether the anchovy originates from the Mediterranean.
